My husband has been seeing people tattoo designs onto leather and since he already owns all the necessary equipment he's curious about trying it himself. He wants to know exactly what he needs to apply to the leather's surface to stop the ink from bleeding or spreading out into the material. Is a simple coating like petroleum jelly enough to keep the ink crisp? I tried looking for a dedicated resource about tattooing leather but I couldn't find anything helpful. If anyone has experience with this unique craft, please share what preparation steps are required before using tattoo ink on leather. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

The ink will penetrate the leather although it will not submerge it to the surface to smear. Most likely it'll just be a thin layers of leather lacquer. It will act as layers of skin.

I haven't tried tattooing leather. It might be possible but there is a tendency for the fibers to absorb ink in uneven ways. You might want to try it on the scraps first is the best way to see how the ink behaves with the specific leather you have. Then, try to adjust the needle depth and pressure. Good luck!

it's possible, but the surface must be sealed with a clear acrylic finisher or lacquer. A petroleum jelly coating isn't gonna work, it can only be used as a lubricant during tattooing
