I’ve been tooling for years using patterns from the greats like Chan Geer and Pete Gorrell, but I’m hitting a wall trying to draw my own. My designs always end up way too stemmy, crowded, or just plain messy. I get one flower done and by the time I reach the next one, I’ve run out of ideas and created a total jungle.
Is there a rule of thumb for belt layouts? when you’re drawing, do you place the flowers and leaves first and then fill in the gaps, or do you work the stems in a specific direction?

I really want to move past book patterns and start creating my own original flow, especially with a big order of belts coming up. any advice on how to keep the design clean and balanced would be a lifesaver!

Just keep your main vine smooth and you just let the leaves fill the empty pockets. I do not recommend forcing them into the design.
