How to cut a clean circle on a tough piece of vegtan?

I'm relearning some leathercraft with a basic coaster project but my circles are coming out a little jagged. It's hard to be precise because I have to apply a lot of pressure to cut through.
For this one I used a fresh boxcutter and circular metal coaster to guide the cut, is there a better way without specialty tools? Would sanding it with sandpaper help finish the edge?

Have you tried making three or four light passes instead of one deep cut? The blade should stay against the metal coaster without distorting the leather shape.

I agree with @mr awes0me! You might want to use some medium grit paper to even out the bumps.

Might I suggest after you get them cut, taking sandpaper and sand the edges to get the round shape you wanted. Then, burnish the edge. You can put some bees wax on the edge or dampen the edge and use a heavy piece of canvas cloth burnish it if don't have a burnishing tool.
