I bought a used Pedersen model 308 (Junker & Ruh SD 28 twin) for work, and it's so annoying!
The needle is hitting too far back, it scrapes the foot and the edge of the needle plate, even with new needles. The plate is already dinged up, so the previous owner had this issue, too!
I need to shift the needle forward about 5 millimeters, but I can't find the adjustment screw. Any idea how to fix this alignment?

If I am not mistaken, the needle position is usually set by loosening the clamp on the needle bar or adjusting the timing of the hook assembly rather than a simple screw youu can turn. If the needle is hitting too far back. It usually means the barr moved or the hook timing is wrong and it needs to be adjusted carefully using the manual or by a technician familiar with the machine.

oh, 5mm is a massive gap. on those Junker & Ruh clones, the needle bar usually sits in a pivoting block or a carriage
look for a large bolt or pinch screw on the main arm casting, usually near where the needle bar enters the machine. you have to loosen that carrier screw and physically slide the entire needle bar assembly forward.
it sounds like a previous jam might have shoved the whole assembly toward the back of the machine

I suspect that the needles are wrong.
I heard that there's been an international shortage of the correct needles for those machines, and I guess that the previous owner tried to buy and use some non original needles from another outsole stitcher
probably try to search for the correct, original needle on online stores

I had a similar strike issue on an old Pedersen. check if the needle plate itself hasn't shifted, sometimes the screws vibrate loose and the plate walks backward

yeah, looks like the needle rocker might have shifted. on the J&R SD 28 clones, there isn't one alignment screw, you usually have to loosen the needle bar carrier assembly to recenter it

check the bushings where the rocker arm pivots
if they're off center, rotating them can shift the needle bar forward or backward. try to do it slowly
