Thinking about a leather couch arm table project

But instead of the usual wood only route, I want to bring some leather into the design and the idea is to have a wooden base that fits snugly over the armrest, then wrap or accent it with leather for that softer, more finished look. Anyway, what I'm still working out is how to make the leather both practical and durable, so it can handle like a cup of coffee, the occasional drink ring, or just everyday use without looking worn out too quickly

Cool idea. If you're set on leather, I'd use a pull-up or oil-tanned hide since it hides marks better and can be wiped down. I'd also seal it with something like Fiebing's Resolene or a thin acrylic top coat, otherwise water rings are going to show fast.

If you prefer something that resists stains. Your best option is a full grain or top grain leather with a protective coating. adding a water-resistant conditioner every few months helps it stay supple without absorbing spills.
