I've had a quick discussion with a friend about vegetable tanned leather for leatherwork. Looks like veg-tan is in demand again and that's thanks to its eco-friendly process and natural look. When this trend started, I was kind of hesitant but I noticed that it actually ages beautifully.

I find it's great for carving, stamping, and patinas over time look amazing for leatherwork but I find it stiffer at first and more sensitive to moisture than chrome-tanned leather. Has anyone worked with vegetable-tanned leather?

Afaik, the leather feels pretty stiff at first. But it loosens up with use and some conditioning which makes it great for long‑lasting projects. The downside is it reacts to moisture and can stain or warp. It also lets it absorb dyes and finishes in a way that feels more unique and personal.
