I have moved past just using basic brown dyes in my leather projects and I am experimenting with custom colors. Layering dyes, creating faded gradients, and trying out unique finishes lets me make things that really stand out and are truly one of a kind. But anyone who has done this knows that dyes can get messy really fast and the final color is not always what you expect.

I sure know how expensive it can get. It also takes a lot of practice to get the same exact result every time.

Has anyone tried it? What is your go-to method for getting a perfect gradient blend on larger pieces and what do you use to clean up accidental dye spills quickly?

if you’re ready to take your fades and sunburst effects to the next level, an airbrush is your secret weapon
It’s a bit of an investment up front, but you’ll use far less dye and gain complete mastery over how much color shows through.
you can layer a bright blue over a black base to get some incredible midnight effects that you just can't achieve with a dauber

I have tried using a spray bottle and I always keep rubbing alcohol and clean rags nearby for spills. Because it lifts most dye before it sets.

Airbrush is quite interesting. I never thought that you could use it. I have only tried using a spray bottle.
