My dad wants heavy-duty leather collars stitched for his bully and malamute. So I'm looking at picking up a Juki LU-563 for the job. I've only ever used domestic machines, so I'm new to industrial ones. Would the LU-563 handle thick leather well enough for collars and small gear?

That's a good thought on going industrial for heavy leather, but based on what you're describing for those collars, I'm a bit hesitant on the LU-563 being ideal. It's a walking foot machine which is key for leather, but it's really designed more for medium to heavy upholstery, canvas, and lighter leathers. I think you'll likely be limited on thread size to something like 207 or maybe 277 if you're lucky. I suggest you look into a triple feed / compound feed machine for the kind of heavy-duty leather work your dad has. Those are built to really grab and pull the thickest assemblies and handle bigger threads with ease.

Yes I think it would. It's a walking foot machine which helps feed thick layers evenly, perfect for leatherwork and for your dad's need for it. Just make sure it's in good condition, and use the right needles and thread, and you'll be

Once you try a Juki LU-563 on leather, you'll wonder why you ever bothered with domestic machines, it's built for this. But fair warning: once you go industrial, there's no going back.
