I'm looking to start with leather, making smaller things, wallet, phone pouches, maybe even some smaller handbags. Now, I know that sewing by hand will probably be the most affordable thing I can do, but what about getting a sewing machine? Any affordable options out there that will do the job?

Firstly, you need to think about how much your budget is.
For small projects like wallets and phone pouches, a great and often affordable option is a manual leather stitching machine like the Tippmann Boss.
It's foot powered and works more like a punch, so you have full control over every stitch. It's built like a tank and can handle thick leather without a problem.
It's a fantastic middle ground between hand stitching and a full electric machine

@Theneedler yeah, the Tippmann Boss is a fantastic machine but it's not the only option. If it's a bit outside your budget, a lot of leatherworkers start with a Chinese made 'cobbler' or 'shoe patcher' machine.
They're often available on Amazon or eBay for a few hundred dollars. They're also hand powered like the Tippmann and can handle thick leather.
The downside is that they require a lot of tuning and tweaking to get them working well, so you have to be a little mechanically inclined.
But once they're dialled in, they're a great budget friendly option for smaller projects

For small leather projects like wallets and pouches, hand sewing is a great starting point, but a sewing machine can save a lot of time. There's lots of good and sffordable brands like Singer, Brother, and Janome. Look for one that can take leather needles, strong thread, and ideally has a walking foot to feed the leather evenly

A quality beginner sewing machine typically costs $200–$500. I recommend something packed with essential features for crafting simple projects which is SINGER. They have affordable options like the M1500. Check it out.

You might consider getting a machine designed for upholstery or canvas. Do you have plans to move into thicker hides or structured bags?

Buying a Consew or Pfaff is a smart choice if you want something that will last.

There are a lot of options online. Have you checked Amazon or eBay? I got mine from there. It depends on what projects yiu'll be doing so you can check the specs that suits it best.
